Day 1 of the inaugural SAISMUN conference began in high spirits. As delegates from the Australian International School, the Lycée Français de Singapour, and the International Community School filed into Adams iLearn 2, the opening ceremony was kicked off with a series of speeches by Mr. Stephen George, our MUN director, and Dr. Ocki Fernandes, Stamford’s High School Principal.
We then had the honour to welcome our keynote speaker Ms. Smita Mitra to the stage to give her inspiring presentation. Smita Mitra is an International consultant on strategic partnerships and sustainable development. Ms. Mitra has worked with UN Women, where she has led programs on Women, Peace and Security and Empowering Women Migrant workers, from Asia to the Arab region.
The Opening Ceremony concluded with an address from our Secretary Generals, Akhil Venkatesh, and Mark McMahon. SAISMUN 2019 then commenced debate.
The Hybrid Committee, a new committee, conceptualized by our student leaders, welcomed its first delegates, offering them a debate formula derived from traditional MUN, with topics that would usually not be debated. The Hybrid Committee discussed the controversial issue of Brexit, with Political Actors standing in for Prime Minister Theresa May and Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn. The General Assembly debated very seriously, the violent situation in the Kashmir region, which was visited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the form of a political actor, along with his Head of Security.
SAISMUN 2019 Day 1 elapsed on a high note. All committees were in serious debates, and innovative new resolutions and ideas were being formed to solve these issues at hand. See you all on Day 2!
